Casa Milà - "La Pedrera"
Historic information
La Pedrera, or Casa Milà, was designed by the Reus-born architect Antoni Gaudí (1852-1926) in 1905 for the Milà family. Building work took place between 1906 and 1910. This sculptural building stands at number 92, Passeig de Gràcia, and is one of the most unusual residential blocks that dot the city’s architectural landscape.

For the project, Gaudí joined forces with the architect Josep Maria Jujol, the iron workers, the Badia brothers, the master foundryman, Manyach, the builder, Josep Bayó, and the plasterer, Joan Beltran.

The most outstanding feature is the sinuous façade with its wrought-iron balconies replicating the natural forms that are a constant feature in Gaudí’s work. The rooftop is a dreamlike space with ceramic chimneys in the shape of warriors and a variety of avant-garde figures. The Casa Milà was inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List in 1984.
In order to know the zone better
This major example of Barcelona modernista architecture and a World Heritage Site, is located in the heart of the Eixample district, on the Passeig de Gràcia, one of the city’s most famous boulevards, which features a whole host of tourist attractions, including the “mançana de la discòrdia”, or “block of discord”. This is a unique example of three different modernista-style façades in a single, 100-metre block: the Casa Lleó Morera (Passeig de Gràcia, 35), designed by Lluís Domènech i Montaner; the Casa Amatller (Passeig de Gràcia, 41), by Josep Puig i Cadafalch; and the Casa Batlló (Passeig de Gràcia, 43), by Antoni Gaudí.

La Pedrera: Vicky (Rebecca Hall), Cristina (Scarlett Johansson) and Judy (Patricia Clarkson) continue with their sightseeing, and visit some of Gaudí’s major landmarks. The unique, impressive rooftop of La Pedrera can be seen in a number of shots. The façade overlooking the Passeig de Gràcia appears in two further scenes.
Did you know that...
The two scenes featuring La Pedrera were filmed on 13th July. If you look closely, when the three American characters are on the rooftop of La Pedrera you’ll see panoramic views of the city with the majestic towers of the Passion façade of the Sagrada Família on the skyline.

Another sequence takes place on the corner of Passeig de Gràcia next to La Pedrera. Vicky and Doug meet up on this magnificent avenue with two American friends, Sally and Adam, who are on holiday in Barcelona.

The Rambla de Catalunya, one of the city’s most pleasant boulevards, which runs parallel to Passeig de Gràcia, is also featured in the film. In one of the final scenes, Vicky and Cristina sit chatting at one of the typical pavement cafés on the central section of the boulevard between Carrer Aragó and Carrer Consell de Cent.
